Power Up Safely: Teaching Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Safety in Your Community

Teaching Lithium Ion Battery Fire Safety in Your Community

Power Up Safely: Teaching Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Safety in Your Community

Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere — and so are the risks.

Lithium-ion batteries were widely introduced to the public in the 1990s, and their use has since become ubiquitous in consumer electronics. Coupled with their tendency to explode when damaged or improperly stored, the fire risk associated with lithium-ion batteries increases annually as they enter more products and electronics.

If you’re a fire safety educator, first responder, teacher, or community leader, you’ve likely heard about the dangers. But does your community understand how to store, charge, and use these batteries safely? Do people, especially young people, know not to charge devices on their beds, or store a fully charged battery on a window?

Teaching lithium-ion battery safety is no longer optional — it’s essential for creating a fire-ready community.

First, Understand the Basics

Before you can teach others, make sure you and your team understand the “why” behind the warnings.

Lithium-ion batteries can overheat and catch fire if damaged, overcharged, or improperly used.

  • The heat from lithium-ion battery failures can reach up to 750º Fahrenheit.
  • Damaged batteries will sometimes fill up with gas and swell, leading to the so-called “spicy pillow effect” and an explosion hazard if the swollen battery is punctured.
  • These fires release toxic gases and particles, making them dangerous for those nearby.

Fires are often fast and hard to extinguish.

  • Unlike fires that need external oxygen, the internal chemical reactions in lithium-ion batteries can produce flammable gases and their own oxygen, allowing them to burn until the fuel source is depleted.
  • Even if flames are temporarily put out, breached cells can meet oxygen and reignite. Because the fire can burn at extremely high temperatures, it requires a lot of water to cool the battery completely and prevent re-ignition.

Where you charge and store your lithium-ion batteries has a big impact.

  • Never charge overnight, as most fires happen while charging.
  • Never charge on the bed, because the heat can’t dissipate properly on the soft surface of a pillow/mattress.
  • Never store lithium-ion batteries in direct sunlight, and make sure they’re at around 50% charge to prevent battery degradation.

Customize the Lesson for Every Audience

Teaching a class of 10-year-olds isn’t the same as training senior citizens or apartment landlords.

When teaching children about lithium battery safety, facts alone won’t cut it. To get through to younger audiences, you need color, characters, action, and repetition. You need materials that don’t just inform, but stick with your community.

Teach with Tools that Kids Actually Like

This is where your kid-focused materials make all the difference. At Fire Safety Education, we offer a variety of lithium-ion battery safety materials for kids of all ages.

Activity Books

In-depth Pamphlets

  • Detailed information that parents can read with their children
  • Helps involve parents in reinforcing fire safety at home
  • Each pamphlet covers key do’s and don’ts in simple terms and graphics

Stickers, Magnets & Promotional Items

These aren’t just giveaways — they’re memory tools. When a child puts a fire safety sticker on their laptop or pencil case, the lesson travels with them.

Why It Works

Children learn best when:

  • The message is visual
  • The activity is interactive
  • The tone is positive (not scary!)
  • They can repeat it back in their own words

Our kid-friendly fire safety kits are designed with these learning principles in mind — to help children understand the risks without overwhelming them. And most importantly, to empower them to act safely at home.

What About Older Audiences?

Our Info Towers and Presentation Displays are specifically designed to make lithium battery safety clear, engaging, and accessible for audiences of all ages. With bold visuals, easy-to-read tips, and real-life examples, these displays break down essential safety information into bite-sized, digestible pieces.

Whether you’re teaching young students, speaking to families at a community event, or reaching adults in public spaces like libraries or fire stations, our displays command attention and spark conversation. They’re perfect for open houses, school lobbies, and safety fairs — anywhere people gather and safety messages need to stick.

Power Shouldn’t Come at a Price

Everyone uses lithium-ion batteries, but not everyone knows how to use them safely. As an educator or public safety professional, you’re in a unique position to prevent tragedies before they happen.

Start the conversation. Use our tools. And help your community stay safe, one battery at a time.

Keep the Flame Alive (Safely!) Your Valentine’s Day Fire Safety Guide

Valentines Day Fire Safety Guide

Keep the Flame Alive (Safely!) Your Valentine’s Day Fire Safety Guide

Valentines Day Fire Safety Guide

Valentine’s Day is all about setting the mood—candles, delicious dinners, and heart-shaped decorations. But let’s talk Valentine’s Day Fire Safety, because nothing kills romance faster than an evening going up in smoke (literally). Whether you’re whipping up love in the kitchen or surprising someone with balloons, keeping fire safety in mind ensures your evening stays heartwarming, not hazardous.

Valentine Home Fire Safety

This Valentine’s Day, let love set your heart aflame—but not your home! From romantic dinners to dreamy decorations, let’s dive into tips that keep your evening magical and fire-safe.

Cooking Up Love: Kitchen Fire Safety Tips

They say the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, but the kitchen is a hotspot for more than just great food—it’s the #1 location for house fires. Before you whisk your Valentine away with a delicious meal, be sure to make fire safety your secret ingredient.

  • Never leave your stovetop unattended while cooking.
  • Store flammable items like dish towels, oven mitts, and paper hearts far from the stove.
  • If oil starts smoking, turn off the burner—don’t fan the flames.
  • Keep pot handles turned inward to avoid accidental spills.

Check out our kitchen fire safety tools and keep the sparks where they belong—in your romance, not your stove!

Tips for Safe Candle Usage at Home

Candles: Keep it Romantic (and Safe)

Nothing sets the mood quite like a candlelit dinner, a relaxing bath, or a cozy glow, as long as you light them up with safety in mind. After all, no one wants their Valentine’s Day to be lit for the wrong reasons!

  • Place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces and at least 12 inches away from anything flammable.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • When it’s time to extinguish the candle, gently blow it out to avoid splashing hot wax.
  • Consider swapping traditional candles for flameless LED versions.

Keep the glow and ditch the danger—explore our candle safety resources.

Valentine's Day Candy Hearts

Love in the Air, Not Sparks!

Balloons are a classic way to lift someone’s spirits on Valentine’s Day, but they can also cause trouble if you’re not careful. Metallic balloons floating away can cause unexpected sparks—literally. When metallic balloons escape into the sky, they can bump into power lines, leading to dangerous explosions and electrical outages.

  • Secure balloons with weights to keep them from floating into ceiling fans, heaters, or power lines.
  • Keep flammable decorations away from candles, heaters, and open flames.
  • Avoid placing decorations near vents, fans, or drafty areas that can blow lightweight items into heat sources

Showing love means keeping those you care about safe. This Valentine’s Day, let fire safety be part of your celebration and keep the warmth where it belongs—your heart!

Personalizing Products: Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Design

Personalizing Fire Safety Products: Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Design

Adding your name, logo, or message to products does more than just make them look cool—it ensures your community remembers the lifesaving information and resources you share. At Fire Safety Education, personalizing products is our specialty, making the process simple, seamless, and effective. Here are some handy tips and tricks to help you design personalized products that light up safety awareness and keep your message front and center.

Imprint Size: Why Every Inch Counts

When it comes to imprinting, size does matter! The size of the imprint area on your product plays a huge role in determining what kind of design works best. For instance, a pen with a one-color imprint won’t capture the details of a large, full-color logo.

  • Tiny Products, Big Impact: Think pencils or stress balls with imprint areas smaller than an inch. Here, simplicity wins the day. Your department’s name, contact information, or bold icons stand out without feeling squished.
  • Larger Products, Larger Designs: Sports bags, custom banners, or event tents? These are prime real estate for detailed logos, multi-color designs, or custom messages.

Pro Tip: Keep it concise and impactful. A simple, well-placed design on a smaller area often stands out better than a complex one.

Resolution Rules: The Difference Between Vector vs. Raster Files

Let’s clear up a few technical terms first. It’ll make personalizing your products so much easier!

  • Vector Art: The hero of personalized products! Scalable without losing quality, vector files like .AI, .EPS, .PDF, or .SVG ensures your logo looks sharp on everything from cups to Info Towers.
  • Raster Art: Works fine for digital use but often falls short in print. If it’s under 300 DPI or in a format like .JPG, .PNG, or .TIFF, it may blur when resized for products.

Not Fireproof: Formats like .JFIF, .DOCX, .WEBMP, .GIF, .CDR, or Screenshots aren’t printable.

Resolution Rules

How to Tell if Your File is Vector Art: Zoom in on the image using Adobe Illustrator or similar software. If the edges stay crisp, it’s vector! Not sure? Send it our way, and we’ll check for you.

From Upload File to Finished Product: How it Works

Send us your text, logo, or artwork, and here’s how your design goes from concept to completion:

Artwork FAQs

Our graphic artists craft a digital mockup to show you how your design will look. This proof is emailed at 72 DPI for quick viewing, but don’t worry! We’ll use the full-resolution file for printing. This is the time to double-check the image and spelling, ensuring all the information you provided is correct. Want changes? Now’s the time to make tweaks or ask questions before production begins. Once you give the green light and approve your proof, we bring your vision to life with precision and care.

Artwork FAQs

Why was my art or logo rejected?

Depending on the product, imprint size, or method, we might need a specific file type of your art or logo. Don’t worry—we’ll explain exactly what we need and work with you to get everything print-ready.

How do I find the right design files to send?

If you’ve had promotional products made before (like tablecloths, water bottles, or decals), there’s a good chance that whoever made them still has the files. Not sure? Try reaching out to the person or designer who originally created your art—they’re likely to have the right file handy. And if you’re still coming up empty, no worries. Send us what you have, and we’ll help you figure it out. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Can you create a logo or custom design for me?

Absolutely! We’ve got you covered—our professional design team is ready to help. For fully custom designs, a department fee of $75 per hour applies. Call for more information at 877-329-0575.

How long does shipping take?

After your items are processed, shipping takes about 5-10 working days.

Tips to Fire Up Your Design

  • Less is More: Simple, clean text or designs work best on smaller imprint areas.
  • Contrast is Key: Choose high-contrast colors for maximum visibility.
  • Think Readability: Avoid overly intricate details that might get lost. Sometimes, text is all you need to make your message stand out!

At Fire Safety Education, we know your personalized products play an important role in raising awareness and keeping communities safe. That’s why we’re here to help every step of the way. Whether you need assistance with file formats, design tweaks, or choosing the perfect product, we’ll ensure your final result is memorable, professional, and impactful.

3 Ways to Increase Your Community Presence this Holiday Season

Community outreach is highly important to not only fire departments, but every company and non-profit organization. It builds credibility, increases social presence and increases the overall goal your department has (in this case, decrease fires and injuries).

As you know, winter is coming! With winter brings an increase in home fires due to home heating, candles and more. Raise awareness and show that your community can rely on your department during the winter season by participating in an event or two! Below are some examples of how your department can get involved this holiday season:

Install Free Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Fireplaces, stoves and home heating are several ways on how CO fumes can build up during the winter months. Instead of handing out free smoke detectors (like the American Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” event), hand out free carbon monoxide detectors! Come up with a catchy name, set aside a weekend and visit households with volunteers to install detectors. Families with young children and the elderly would especially benefit from an event like this as they are more likely to get sick from CO.

Be Involved in New Year’s Eve Party

If your community has an end of the year, New Year’s Eve party or event where fireworks are involved, be present! Fireworks always brings in the crowds, and they also happen to be a fire hazard. Being trained professionals, your fire department would add a sense of safety at the event. Your department could even host in a barbecue and ask for donations.

Join the Holiday Parade lineup

Does your community host a holiday parade? Get involved! Parades are a great way to become more engaged with your community while promoting fire safety.

Whether this list applies to you or not, one thing is certain: community involvement, even a small amount, is extremely important. As the U.S. Fire Administration states, visibility is crucial not only for department growth, but also for its survival.

As always, if you need additional resources or handouts for any upcoming community holiday events you plan to be a part of, we want to help! We have lots of holiday, candle and carbon monoxide products to choose from:

As always, if you have any questions or need advice feel free to call us at (877) 329-0575!

How to Design a Fire Safety Campaign for Seniors

Fire Safety and Prevention Products to Teach Fire Safety all Year Long!

Deciding to launch a fire safety awareness campaign is a big step –
Congratulations, on choosing to keep your community informed and aware on the importance of fire safety!

As you know, most fires are preventable and fire prevention education helps protect families, homes and possessions from the destructive force of fire. Adults 65 and older are more likely to die, or be hurt in a fire. Making sure to include seniors and their caregivers in your fire prevention education plans will help seniors plan and prepare for fire.

Senior citizens are important members of your community and should be included in your fire safety and prevention campaign

1. Senior citizens are twice as likely to be hurt or injured in a fire. Be sure to explain the heightened risks and to help create a prevention plan to avoid accidents and help them prepare to safely escape their home.

2. Have an event at a local hall, your fire station, or at senior community center. Focus on smoke alarm safety, accident prevention, and senior fire safety. Use bold presentation materials, with easy-to-read graphics and larger print to help everyone in the audience be included.

3. Have a safe cooking demonstration and provide information on burn prevention and fire safety. Involve your audience! Make a quiz or a game about common fire safety hazards and how you can prevent and prepare for fire.

4. Give them something to remember – Safety tools to help seniors prevent fire is a great way to help spread your safety message. Oven mittspot holders and oven sticks are great tools to help prevent burns and scalds. Reminder magnetsmagnifiers, and informational pamphlets can help seniors always be aware of the importance of fire safety.

5. Help them be prepared – Seniors often have medical needs that emergency services should be aware of. Having medical alert information readily available can help save time during an emergency event. Products like Med+Alert Magnets and Pill holders are great products to help your seniors, and your department with their medical needs.

How to Design a Fire Safety Campaign For Children

Fire Safety and Prevention Products to Teach Fire Safety all Year Long!

Deciding to launch a fire safety awareness campaign is a big step – Congratulations, on choosing to keep your community informed and aware on the importance of fire safety!

As you know, most fires are preventable and fire prevention education helps protect families, homes and possessions from the destructive force of fire. Creating a fire safety and prevention campaign that helps inform every member of your community is the best way to make sure your fire safety message is heard. In this series of emails we will discuss who you should market too, how you should do it, and where to get funding to help your events.

Children should be your #1 focus when starting a fire safety and prevention campaign

1. Most fires occur at home. Starting fire safety education early allows children to learn about fire risks, safety and prevention. Then, they bring the message home to the rest of the family.

2. Children learn well with active presentations and play based learning. Get the children involved in your presentation. Active partcipation will help them remember your message. Some examples include:

  • Stop, Drop, & Roll exercises
  • Safe Cooking Demonstrations
  • Safe Escape Plans and creating a fire evacuation plan
  • Encourage them to participate in smoke alarm checks and fire drills at home
  • Use colorful presentations materials, banners and displays to help get your message noticed and keep their attention.

3. Make learning fun! Coloring and Activity Books are a great way to help children learn about fire safety and prevention. A combination of coloring pages, facts, and games help children learn and let them have fun.

4. Give them something to remember – Fire Hats! Every child wants to be a Junior Firefighter, having fire hats with your stations name and shield ready to hand out is a great way to help keep fire safety on the front of their minds, and help promote your station.
