The most important tenets of gun safety is to treat every gun as if it were loaded and as if it could fire at any time. Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction at all times. Gun owners should take all the necessary precautions to ensure that their firearms do not accidentally discharge. An estimate of about 50% of households in the United States own firearms. This suggests that even though many children are not raised in a household with a gun, there’s still a good chance that they may come across one while at a friend or family member’s home. Children should be taught that if they find an unattended firearm, they should keep their distance, not touch it and find an adult. Many children’s ideas about guns come from how they see them portrayed in movies and television, so it’s important that they know the difference between fantasy and reality.
Keep firearms and ammunition under lock and key. Safety locks and loaded chamber indicators can offer additional measures of security. Inexperienced firearm owners can also take advantage of training programs offered by police departments or local NRA chapters. With adequate education, accidental deaths and injuries from firearms can be drastically reduced.
